Retiring rooms for women travellers — practical safety notes
What women travelling solo or in groups should know about IRCTC retiring rooms — safety, dormitory norms, and recommended booking practices.
Updated 2026-02-15
Retiring rooms are widely used by women travelling alone or in groups across India's rail network. They're generally safer than the surrounding station area at night and on the cheaper end of female-friendly station accommodation. A few practices help maximise that safety.
Women-only dormitories
Most large stations — including NDLS, HWH, CSTM, MAS, SBC, SC, and Lucknow — operate dedicated women-only dormitories. These are physically separate from mixed or men's dormitories and staffed by women attendants during the day at major stations. When booking on the IRCTC portal, look for the "Ladies Dormitory" room type option; if available, it's listed explicitly.
Single rooms are usually safer than dormitories
If your budget allows, a single room (private, lockable) gives substantially better security than a dormitory bed. The price difference is typically ₹200–₹400 per slot — a worthwhile premium for a solo night stay.
Practical recommendations
- Arrive in daylight if possible. The walk from your train to the retiring room reception is the most exposed part of the experience. Daytime arrivals at major stations are routinely uneventful.
- Use the GRP/RPF help desk if needed. The Railway Police Force operates a 24x7 help desk at major stations. They can escort you to the retiring room reception if you feel unsafe.
- Note the station helpline — 139. The Indian Railways security helpline is available across the network.
- Confirm room location with reception before walking off. Some station retiring rooms are on upper floors or in adjacent buildings; staff will direct or escort you.
- Lock the door from inside and use the chain. Door quality varies; chains and additional bolts are standard at most rooms.
- Keep your phone charged and within reach. Power outlets work at most stations but aren't always conveniently placed.
Stations with consistently strong reviews from women travellers
Based on aggregated traveller feedback over recent years, retiring rooms at the following stations have a reputation for cleanliness, staff responsiveness, and security:
- New Delhi (NDLS) — modern facility, prominent women-only dorm
- Mumbai CSMT (CSTM) — well-maintained, central location
- Bengaluru City (SBC) — recently renovated
- Chennai Central (MAS) — strong staff oversight
- Yesvantpur Junction (YPR) — newer facility, clean
- Howrah (HWH) — large facility with clear signage
Stations to be cautious about
Smaller stations with limited overnight foot traffic, especially in poorly-lit areas, are less ideal for solo women. If you have a choice between booking at a smaller intermediate station versus a major junction nearby, prefer the junction.
